A bank’s contract staff in Ghana has been detained by security forces for reportedly stealing close to GH¢1.2m ($202,000) from the bank accounts of customers, including a deceased former Inspector General of Police and a deceased judge. The 25-year-old Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie was allegedly able to use his boss’s password to carry out the transactions. He reportedly captured footage of his boss entering her password and used this to gain access to the accounts over a period of two months.
He is believed to have used part of the stolen money to buy an iPhone 14 Pro Max phone, a Toyota Camry and pay for an airplane ticket to Dubai, where he intended to flee with his girlfriend.
The police arrested the accused at Kotoka International Airport, Accra, after focusing their attention on him. The accused has pleaded not guilty to the 13 charges against him, which include forgery and conspiracy. Eleven other accomplices are still at large, but the police investigation is ongoing.
