Some people count down to their birthday with a cake order. Shatta Wale counts down with a whole new song. On 11 October 2026, the Shatta Movement boss released “One More Year”, a brand-new single he produced himself, landing just six days before he turns 42 on 17 October. The cover tells you the mission in one look: a single candle burning on a cream cake inside a deep red room, with “Prod by Shatta Wale” written under the title. No fireworks, no crowd, just one flame. Chale, when the Dancehall King keeps it this simple, know say he dey talk from the heart.

Shatta Wale: From Bandana to the Birthday Boy

Before the Shatta Movement filled stadiums, there was Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., a Korle Gonno boy who first called himself Bandana and scored with “Bandana from Ghana” in 2004. The second coming as Shatta Wale changed everything: “Dancehall King” ruled radio and won him Artiste of the Year at the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, “My Level” and “Taking Over” kept the streets loud, and in 2019 he stood next to Beyoncé and Major Lazer on “Already” from The Lion King: The Gift. Love him or argue with him, nobody in Ghana music can say they don’t know him.

A Birthday Tradition, Shatta Style

This is not Shatta’s first birthday rodeo. He already has “Happy Birthday” in the catalogue from 2016, and last year he dropped “Birthday” on 15 October 2025, two days before the big day. That official audio has since crossed a million views on YouTube. So when October reaches and the Shatta Movement starts changing profile pictures, everybody knows a birthday record is loading. This year he came early. Six days early, to be exact, like the man wey reach party venue before the canopy people.

The Vibe: Gratitude With a Candle On Top

“One More Year” is short and straight to the point at just over two and a half minutes. Apple files it under Afropop, and the title alone carries the whole mood: thanks for life, one more lap around the sun, and a quiet nod to everything it took to get here. Shatta handled the production himself, so this one is his own handiwork from the beat up. The official audio slide on his YouTube channel went up in the early hours of 12 October and had pulled close to 38,000 views by the morning of 13 October. Not bad for a song wey still dey wait for the actual cake.

Why It Matters Now

Shatta Wale has been on a serious run in 2026. He opened the year with A TASTE OF THE AFRICAN KING, followed with The Interface and African King, then kept the singles coming with “Heat” in September. He has also been jumping on other people’s records, from Medikal’s “Sika” to Nawtyboi Tattoo’s “Murky”. In a month where everybody is fighting for the airwaves, “One More Year” gives the Shatta Movement their official soundtrack for 17 October. Expect to hear it at every birthday turn-up from Korle Gonno to Kumasi this week, and probably at a few office parties where the boss is not even a Shatta fan.
