Nathino’s ‘Jesus Is Born’ — 2021 Gospel Catalog Rewind of the Christmas Song That Arrived in January

In Ghana, Christmas does not end on 26 December. Ask any household. The tree is still standing in the corner in February, the “Merry Christmas & Happy New Year” banner at the junction is fading but refusing to come down, and somebody’s uncle is still asking for his “Christmas” in the middle of January like the season has an extension form. So when Nathino released a Christmas-titled single called “Jesus Is Born” on 21 January 2021, almost four full weeks after the turkey (or, let’s be honest, the chicken) was finished, nobody in Accra was confused. Here, the season closes when the season decides.

Today’s catalog rewind goes back to the very first domino of one of the most famous weeks in the Nathino story. Before the grace, before the diary entry, before the bar clinic, there was a simple, bold declaration in white letters. Make we open the file.

🎧 Listen: “Jesus Is Born” (Official Audio)

“This Year We Go Do Am Back to Back”

Every big week starts with a warning, and Nathino gave his in plain Pidgin. On Friday, 15 January 2021, he posted on X (then Twitter): “This year we go do am back to back 🔥🔥🔥 #Nathino #RFGM”. Some people make New Year resolutions about the gym and abandon them by the second week. This man made a resolution about releases and then actually kept it, which is frankly a bit rude to the rest of us.

Six days after that promise, “Jesus Is Born” landed. The next day came “Favour”. On Saturday, “My Life”. On Sunday, “Loyalty Flow”. Four days, four singles, and the first brick in the wall was this one: a song whose title is not a question, not a request, but a statement of faith. Everything else that week was built on top of it.

The order is worth noticing. You could open a run with your loudest banger, the one you want the DJs to grab. Nathino opened with the foundation instead. For a camp literally called Rap For God Music, starting the year’s big push with the birth of Jesus is less a marketing decision and more a mission statement. First the root, then the fruit.

Judge This Song by Its Cover (Just This Once)

The artwork is minimal, and that is the point. A dark, mottled background in deep crimson and black fills the square, a texture that looks like embers glowing at night or a quiet room just before somebody strikes a match. In the middle, “JESUS IS BORN” is stacked in big, bold white serif letters, the kind of font you see on an old hymnbook or a church anniversary banner. A small “Nathino” signature sits under the last word like a witness signing a document.

Then there is the top-right corner: a bright white circle, glowing against the darkness. Call it a moon, call it the star over Bethlehem, call it light breaking into a dark room. However you read it, the whole message of the season is right there in one image. The night is heavy, the light is small, but the light is winning. No tinsel, no Santa, no snowman sweating in Harmattan. Just darkness, light, and three words.

A Christmas Song for the Other Eleven Months

Most Christmas songs have a very short working contract. They clock in at the start of December, play in every mall from Accra Mall to Kumasi City Mall until your ears beg for mercy, and then they are sacked on 2 January. Releasing a nativity-titled song three weeks into the new year sounds like missing the bus, but it also changes what the song is for. Out of the shopping season, “Jesus Is Born” stops being decoration and becomes declaration. It is not about lights and jingles; it is about what the whole celebration was supposed to mean in the first place.

That is very much the Nathino lane. As our “Who Is Nathino?” profile explains, he is an urban-gospel artist who also mixes and masters records, the kind of musician who builds the house and then personally sweeps the compound. A three-minute-plus Christian single, released on his own terms, outside the usual calendar, is exactly the sort of move an independent faith-rooted artist can make when no label executive is standing over him with a holiday release schedule.

Why “Jesus Is Born” Still Matters in 2026

Look at the date today. It is late October, and very soon the December playlists will start their annual invasion. Before the mall speakers do their worst, this is a good moment to rediscover a Ghanaian gospel song that treats the season as something deeper than a sale. It is also the origin point of a week that fans of Nathino still talk about: the January 2021 run that proved an independent artist in Ghana could keep the oven hot day after day without a big machine behind him.

And there is a simple joy in the title itself. Three words, no metaphor, no punchline. In a music scene where everybody is trying to be clever, sometimes the boldest thing you can do is say the plain thing loudly. Put it on now, put it on again in December, and if your Christmas tree is still up in February, play it then too. In Ghana, nobody go judge you.
