Some people do research and development in a laboratory with white coats and goggles. Dwin, The Stoic and Rhaffy did theirs in the studio, and the result is “R&D,” a ten-track joint album that landed on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. Chale, the experiment was simple: take one husky-voiced balladeer, one producer who refuses to stay in one genre, eight years of friendship, and a guest list that includes Praiz and Eva Alordiah. Stir with love. Results: your heart will not be okay.

The duo did not even wait for the usual Friday rush. They dropped it midweek, and by New Music Friday the We The Stoics page on X was calling it “the album of the year” and telling the whole timeline, “Run, don’t walk, to a streaming platform.” One excited supporter tweeted on release day, “it’s officially R & D seasonnnnn!!!” We checked the calendar. Correct.

⚡ The Drop in 30 Seconds

R&D is the first full-length album from the pair, coming after their 2023 joint EP Love Lane. It runs ten songs in under half an hour on St. Claire Records, the label Dwin runs as founder, with Rhaffy producing every single track and handling the mixing and mastering on most of them. The guests are Celeste Ojatula, Wizard Chan, Praiz, Sheheryar Rehan, Eva Alordiah, Njoki Karu, Elestee and DOTTi The Deity. Three songs were already out before release day: “1 4 U” (March 2025), “Side” (August 2026) and “Heavenly” (September 2026). The other seven are brand new.

Track by Track: Love, Tested in the Lab

The album opens with “Music” featuring Celeste Ojatula, and it starts with a Yoruba chant, “keere keere o,” before inviting you to surrender to the groove. The We The Stoics page hyped it with “A gborin tuntun de o!”, the kind of Yoruba gist that needs no translation once the beat drops. Then “Heavenly” with Wizard Chan floats in with that otherworldly feeling of being drawn to somebody, and “1 4 U” is the promise to stay through the sweet days and the hard ones.

“Render” is where the church choir in your head will start humming. Praiz brings that unmistakable silky tone, and he teased the song with the line “Girl I surrender… my heart, my soul, my body… what shall I render,” which sounds like it borrowed a page from the Sunday hymn book. Dwin also joked that Rhaffy “took us to church… sorta,” and one fan swore the duo had turned a gospel song into a love song. Aunty, keep your hymn book close, but this one is for the dance floor. “Side” with Sheheryar Rehan is about wanting closeness when patience is running out, while “Just Dance” with rapper Eva Alordiah turns the whole thing physical. “Hear Me” with Njoki Karu captures feelings that are too heavy to keep quiet.

The back half gets nostalgic. “Cotonou” paints sunlight, laughter and two people moving in sync, and Dwin has already added it to his list of songs he wants to perform in specific cities, with “Cotonou” naturally booked for Cotonou. “Company” with Elestee, which Dwin calls “one of my faves off R&D,” plays with that déjà vu feeling of meeting someone again. The closer, “Abike” with DOTTi The Deity, is a straight invitation for a woman to say what she wants and how she feels. Communication is key, and the album ends by putting the microphone in her hand.

The Cover: Sofa Summit

The artwork looks like the opening scene of a very stylish meeting. The two men sit on a beige sofa in front of warm cream curtains, everything glowing like a golden-hour photoshoot. One wears a red patterned vest over a black tee with his hands clasped; the other is in a red sleeveless top, arm stretched across the back of the sofa like he owns the living room and the landlord too. A small white monogram sits at the bottom. No big title, no shouting. Just two friends who know the work is good.

Who Are Dwin, The Stoic & Rhaffy?

Dwin, The Stoic, born Edwin Madu, is the Nigerian singer-songwriter known for ballads that turn personal feelings into full stories. He wrote his first song in 2007, dropped the 15-track Master of Ballads in 2024, and runs St. Claire Records. Rhaffy, born Nwanyanwu Raphael Chinedu, is a producer, songwriter and artist who moves between Afropop, electronic dance music, soul and hip-hop, with his 2024 single “Serenade” and the ODA CITY Vol. 1 tape with Tentik on his record. A mutual friend brought them together for a session in Victoria Island eight years ago, and since then they have given us “Streets,” “Without Your Love” and the Love Lane EP. Rhaffy builds the room; Dwin fills it with feelings.

Why R&D Matters Now

October has been loud. In the same week, the streets were busy with big street-pop and rap projects like Blaqbonez’s ‘NOMADINHO: 4TH PRIME’, and Rhaffy and Dwin even fronted a Fresh Out Friday cover alongside those names. R&D is the soft counterweight: a full album about love that still makes you want to move. Abuja radio has already been spinning “Render” and “Heavenly,” the duo held an Abuja listening session, and on Sunday, 18 October they threw a release party at Fired & Iced in Lekki. For Ghanaian lovers of slow-burn Afropop, this is the playlist for that long drive to Aburi. Proper research. Excellent development.
