Every Ghanaian knows the word. You stub your toe on the door: ajei! Your friend shows you the price of tomatoes at Makola: ajei! The DJ drops your favourite tune at a wedding and the aunties rise from their plastic chairs like a choir: ajei! It is the national sound of shock, sweetness and small pain, all in one breath. Now Kuami Eugene, the self-styled Rockstar, has turned that exclamation into a full song, and if the chant does not follow you home from work this weekend, check your ears.

His new single “Ajei” landed on Thursday, 22 October 2026 through his own Clear Road Music Records, distributed by ONErpm, with a playful “Fun Video” dropping on his YouTube channel the same day. One day later, Spotify had already slotted it into New Music Friday playlists. Not bad for a song that is shorter than the queue at the Kaneshie trotro station.

⚡ The Drop in 30 Seconds

“Ajei” is a 2:41 Afrobeats party chant with a highlife heartbeat, produced by Beatz Vampire and written by Eugene Marfo himself. Kuami opens like a master of ceremonies with “Congratulations to you… ladies and gentlemen”, then slides into cheeky Twi-English lover-boy talk. The hook is pure playground genius: “See now you crying, buei buei buei buei / See now you shouting, ajei ajei ajei ajei.” A second section bounces a short “da wo so” call-and-response back and forth over the drums. There are no features and no long intro. It is just Kuami, a hot beat and a word everybody already knows how to shout.

🎧 Watch & Listen: “Ajei”

The Vibe: Buei Buei, Ajei Ajei

Some songs need three listens before they open up. “Ajei” needs about eleven seconds. Beatz Vampire builds the beat for movement: punchy drums, a bouncing groove and enough space in the middle for Kuami’s melodies to do their usual sweet-talking. Kuami, meanwhile, is in full mischief mode. He promises his lady that “if you do me, I do”, warns that he is “gonna make you shake” with “no delay”, and then checks on her like a gentleman: “Are you okay?” Romance and comedy in one verse. Only a Ghanaian lover-boy can flirt and do customer service at the same time.

The real weapon is the hook. “Buei buei” and “ajei ajei” are not words you need a dictionary for; they are sounds your body already makes. That is why the song works so well for the TikTok age. One chant, one dance move, one funny face, and the challenge writes itself. Expect to hear it in taxis, at Friday night spots in Osu and from that one cousin who will shout “AJEI!” every time someone drops a plate at the family gathering. The mix of Twi and English also keeps it local and global at once, the same trick that turned “Angela” into a national anthem for lover boys back in the day.

The Cover: Pink Suit Energy

The artwork looks like a wedding proposal that wandered into a fashion shoot. Kuami stands side-on in a crisp all-white suit, dark sunglasses and shiny black shoes, his head bowed over a bouquet of pink and white roses. He is planted on a pink and white checkerboard floor, and behind him giant glowing white letters spell out “AJEI” across a soft pink wall. His name sits neatly to the left, and the Clear Road Music Group logo watches from the top corner. It is romantic, slightly dramatic and very Rockstar, which is exactly the song.

Who Is Kuami Eugene?

Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Kwame Marfo in Akim Oda, is one of the defining Ghanaian voices of the last decade: singer, songwriter and record producer in one body. He grew up singing and playing instruments in church, built his first home studio in his mother’s kitchen at 17, and burst into the public eye by finishing third on the MTN Hitmaker reality show in 2016. Richie Mensah signed him to Lynx Entertainment, and the hits followed fast: “Angela”, “Ebeyeyie”, “Wish Me Well”, “Confusion” and the KiDi link-up “Ohemaa”, plus his 2018 debut album Rockstar. In 2020 he was crowned Artiste of the Year and Highlife Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.

After years with Lynx, including a 2022 partnership with EMPIRE, he stepped out on his own in 2024, launching his music under Rockstar Records and Clear Road Music Group, starting with “Belinda”. Since then the pace has been relentless. This year alone he has delivered “Scatter”, the Gyakie duet “Stranger”, “We Go” and a string of guest verses, keeping his name on playlists almost every month. “Ajei” is the latest brick in that wall.

Why “Ajei” Matters Now

A few weeks ago Kuami gave us “We Go”, a serious song about fighting demons and refusing to run away. Then he played the lover on Mo Jigger’s “Junior Maame”. “Ajei” completes the triangle: after the struggle and the sweetness comes pure fun. That range is exactly why Kuami has lasted while many of his Hitmaker-era peers faded. He can preach, he can beg, and he can make the whole room shout one word.

It is also a big week for the man behind the beat. Beatz Vampire produced Dikoo’s TrapAkan joy anthem “Ahosepe”, and now he hands one of Ghana’s biggest hitmakers a short, sticky, dance-first record. As December party season gets closer, DJs will be hunting for songs that start fast, hook early and leave before anybody gets bored. At 2:41 with a chorus a toddler can sing, “Ajei” ticks every box. Do not be surprised if “ajei” becomes the official reaction word of Detty December. You have been warned.
